How We Survive
A novel by Mercy M’fon
Some people spend their whole lives surviving. The world tests and retests them over and over. These people are not victims; they are the most calculating among us. When the world burns, look toward those who have glimpsed the world’s worst. Look toward those who navigate life in ways most couldn’t imagine. Look towards a survivor.
Loon, New York’s City Defense Strategist, is one of those survivors. Their father’s death pushes them to realize how much they had been surviving their own relationship with Mara. When they are ready to walk away, the world unravels. A cruel cat-borne parasite mutates, turning people into predators and prey, and leaving cities in ruins.
Loon desperately tries to reconnect with their mother and sister across the country. But the volatile parasite has created variants. One causing people to turn into ferals which hunt and feed on humans. And the other has left Loon to watch Mara fade away, devastation in slow motion. Alone in the chaotic world, they find themself caring for and protecting the one person they were ready to leave. When survival is on the line, who will Loon become in the end?
How We Survive is an unflinching yet tender queer-centered literary dystopian horror about found family, unraveling love, and the courage it takes to make decisions which will break one’s own heart.
We let our own demise into our homes, playing with our children, and cuddled it in our beds. Once beneath our skin, it merely had to mutate.
